Kus sa elama hakkad

Arrina, Scotland, Suurbritannia

Rowan Cottage is situated on the Applecross Penninsula about half way between the delightful villages of Sheldaig and Applecross in the lovely Arrina community.

The cottage is a former Croft house and is tucked away with a beautiful view of the mountains and a small walled garden.

Applecross has a rich recorded history and was first settled by Mesolithic hunter gathers over 9000 years ago and was one of the earliest centres of Christianity on mainland Britain. The Mackenzie clan controlled the land until the mid 19th Century when the Applecross Trust took over management of the estate with the emphasis on preserving the natural and cultural heritage of the peninsula.

The Applecross peninsula is on the North Coast 500 route and the Bealach Na Bà (pass of the cattle) crosses the penninsula, a single track road with hair pin bends which at its height have stunning views to Skye and the Inner Hebrides. There is also a coastal road from Sheildaig round to Applecross which has amazing views of the Torridon Loch and the Isles of Rathsay and Skye.

The pennisular itself has wild moorland, an enchanting patchwork of lochans and beautiful beaches at the Sands and Applecross bay, with coastal communities nestled in small bays. Wildlife include pine martins, red squirrels, imposing Red Stags and the majestic white tails eagles at Sheildaig.

For walkers there are the Torridon Mountains, including Beinn Alligin, Beinn Eighe, Liathach, SgurrDubh, Sgurr nan Lochan Uaine, Beinn Liath Mhor, Beinn na h-Eaglaise, Beinn Damh and Beinn Sheildaig before you reach the penninsula. On Applecross itself there are Sgurr a’ Chaorachain and Meall Gorm. With beautiful paths for easier walking from the old bridle way between Ardheslaig to Kenmore (which overlooks the Torridon hills) or a walk out to the Uags Bothy for the more adventurous.

For eating there is the highly regarded Applecross Inn set in Applecross bay (with a fish and chips van on the shore, over 50 malt whiskies, local Applecross Ale and excellent food including locally caught seafood). Or the Walled Garden also in Applecross Award wining garden to table West Highland Food. A little further afield in Sheildaig there is the Tigh an Eileen Hotel, the Coastal Kitchen and Bar or wonderful teas, coffees and cakes at Nanny’s.

Shopping wise there is a shop in Sheildaig and the Post Office in Camusteil (near Applecross) or the Spar in Lochcarron (24 miles away). There is a community owned petrol pump available 24 hours in Applecross.
