Welcome to the 5-star historic Abingdon Donkey Lodge! We're ON The Creeper Trail, WATERFRONT, + have sweet, fuzzy donkeys you can pet! Your stay includes the UPSTAIRS of our majestic home: 2 HUGE bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, a dining area, + a balcony. (Your hosts live downstairs, so we share an entrance.) No kitchen or laundry access. We host up to 4 guests ages 12 and over. No pets, please. TWO parking spaces. **Please read all details before booking. Cats may visit you. Free farm tour by request.

***If you have cat allergies, please reconsider booking with us. We have three beloved felines named Jake, Ricki, and Teddy, who are your unofficial hosts. They will certainly visit you during your stay. :)

Abingdon Donkey Lodge, built in 1760 as a one-room log cabin--and then enlarged in 1830 to become a traditional farmhouse--is one of the oldest still-standing residences in Washington County. If these walls could talk, they would tell stories of a bygone era when Daniel Boone walked the Native American trail (that many years later became The Creeper Trail) right in front of this house, stories of The Revolutionary War before George Washington was president, tales of Civil War times when the upstairs of this residence served as a hospital for soldiers, accounts of the young railroad workers who left letters for their local loves inside the crevices of our rock springhouse in the mid-1900s, and so much more.

Fast forward 262 years, and this property has been completely remodeled with high-end luxury amenities, with great care to use reclaimed and repurposed wood from the 18th and 19th centuries. It is now a donkey sanctuary and Airbnb owned by two THRICE-VACCINATED married lesbians (we also live downstairs) who strive to promote inclusion and diversity throughout Southwest Virginia--AND who strive to educate the public that donkeys should not be viewed as second-class citizens in the equine world. We're both replants who were born in the area, moved away many years ago (after swearing we'd never come back), and now here we are, attempting to create the change we want to see here in Appalachia. Who would have ever thought!?

Your official hosts, Christal and Jane, live (and work) downstairs at Abingdon Donkey Lodge. Christal is a best-selling writer and teacher; Jane is a consultant, engineer, and mathematician. You are renting the UPSTAIRS of our majestic home, totaling over 1250 square feet--which you'll have completely to yourself. (The only shared space is the front door and foyer through which you'll enter our residence.) Your stay includes FIVE rooms (2 bedrooms, 2 baths--one with a shower and the other with a shower/small jacuzzi tub, and a dining area), and sleeps up to 4 guests over the age of 12. No pets, please. ***Please also note that there is no kitchen or laundry room access. Furthermore, there is no microwave in your dining area, as our insurance policy will not allow cooking upstairs.

The dining area includes a gorgeous 150 year-old farm table with chairs, a mini-fridge, a coffee station, an ice maker, and a water cooler. We provide all essential amenities including heat/AC, high-speed Wi-Fi, and flat screen TVs with Amazon Fire Sticks in each bedroom. You also have your own private outdoor WATERFRONT space, which includes a picnic table, a small charcoal grill, Adirondack chairs, and a fire pit. (Please bring your own charcoal; we provide grill utensils, as well as two buckets of logs for the firepit upon request). We provide a free donkey tour upon request too.

Abingdon Donkey Lodge is located smack dab between Damascus and Abingdon, with easy access to the Appalachian Trail, Barter Theatre, Abingdon Winery, top notch restaurants that can compete with any city in the U.S. (We lived in downtown Atlanta for years, so we have high expectations when it comes to dining out), and more. The Creeper Trail literally runs THROUGH OUR FRONT YARD, so you're steps away from hiking and biking galore. ***See our guidebook for our favorite places to eat and our top picks of things to do in the area.

Here's what you need to know about our guidelines here at Abingdon Donkey Lodge. Than you so much in advance for making sure ALL ACCOMPANYING GUESTS are aware of them:

1. If you or any of your traveling companions are allergic to cats, please reconsider booking with us. We have three adorable (and occasionally mischievous) felines--Jake, Ricki, and Teddy--who will serve as your unofficial hosts. They will certainly come upstairs to visit you. ***Our cats are not allowed outside. Please keep all windows and doors leading to outside--even your balcony doors upstairs--shut at all times, except when entering or exiting.

2. Thank you for understanding that all guests must be 12 years of age--AND that we cannot accept pets. Please also understand that if you have friends or family in the area, they may not bring their pets or their children under 12 here on our property to visit you. (This is due to insurance regulations--because we are an equine educational facility and not a petting zoo.)

3. Please wear shoes outside at all times. When it rains here, all kinds of cool (and SHARP) old artifacts wash to the surface. ***Closed-toed shoes are required when participating in the donkey tour.

4. Thank you in advance for NOT rearranging indoor furniture or storing your bikes inside our home.

5. Please be mindful that your hosts live (and work) downstairs--and that old homes creak, groan, and have almost no insulation. Christal and Jane are usually in bed by 9:00 PM and up by 6:00 AM. We are especially mindful of our noise levels when we have guests and know that you'll show us the same courtesy.

6. Cross the street ONLY at the orange cones. We care about your safety.

7. We are a non-smoking and candle-free listing.

8. Please give us a 24-hour notice if you’d like to schedule a farm tour to pet our sweet, fuzzy donkeys. Christal and Jane both work full-time jobs from home that keep us busy during the day. Right now we are doing most of our tours about 45 minutes before dark. If you do not schedule with us 24 hours in advance, there's a good chance we will not be able to accommodate your schedule. Also, please note that the farm tour takes place outdoors, and therefore is dependent upon weather conditions. Our insurance policy will not allow us to take guests into the pasture if it's wet, muddy, and/or raining. All guests that request a donkey tour must sign a waiver to enter the pasture where our beloved equines live.

***For more information, find us online by searching for Abingdon Donkey Lodge. We also have a 1957 Greyhound bus turned tiny house on the other end of our property (approximately 50 yards from the house) that we rent out to a maximum of two guests. We call her BAB, the Big-Ass Bus. She is available seasonally.

We can't wait to meet you!

Abingdon, Virginia, Ameerika Ühendriigid

The historic Abingdon Donkey Lodge is located in the small community of Alvarado on a bustling section of The Creeper Trail. Head into Abingdon for breakfast at The Girl & the Raven, White Birch Food & Juice, or Cracker Barrel. Fly fish the day away in the South Fork of the Holston River, one of the premier trout streams in Southwest Virginia, and treat yourself to a wine tasting at Abingdon Vineyards. Bike on the Creeper Trail, hike the Appalachian Trail, kayak at South Holston Lake, or visit The Channels Nature Preserve, a secret local gem. The stars here are AMAZING, as we're far from the city lights. And our front yard has a perfect open area where you can stargaze. Our favorite restaurants for lunch and dinner are Rain, 128 Pecan, The Girl & the Raven, Luke's Cafe, and Greeko's Cafe' and Grill, all in Abingdon. Dinner at The Tavern is a special treat! Enjoy made-from-scratch ice cream or cake at Anthony's Desserts, too.
