Whispering Oak was lovingly built in 1908 by the Mothershed family. It is adorned by a massive Oak tree that had claimed its roots there long before the home was built. The large yard is framed by a beautiful ornate iron fence. There is a great view of the sunset from the front porch. We renovated the home Mar 2019 and divided it into 2 apartments. The rooms are spacious and the original hardwood floors are stunning. There are luxury linens for you to enjoy and a kitchenette for refreshments.

One of the best features of Whispering Oak is the perfect location. It is right in the heart of midtown between Overton Square and Cooper/Young entertainment districts and only 10 minutes from downtown and the river. We furnished Whispering Oak with personally selected pieces to make you feel special and at home. We love traveling and tried to think of all the amenities that we enjoy when we travel and we wanted to create a memorable experience for all who stay with us. This is a very large property with private fenced front and backyard and large patio in a peaceful backyard for you to enjoy on those cool spring days and fall evenings and everything in between . We have provided beverages and sweets for you and carefully selected linens to provide a restful retreat for your time away from home. You will also find a selection of tourist information to introduce you to all that is great about our city. There are cameras mounted on each corner of the exterior of the house. The cameras were installed by the previous owners and are not currently operating. We cannot wait for you to experience Whispering Oak and see what southern hospitality is all about.

You will not find a better location in the entire city. All the things you will want to see and enjoy about Memphis are within 10 minutes of Whispering Oak. First of all, Midtown Memphis is like no other city. It is full of unique, locally owned restaurants, museums, art galleries, breweries and theaters. Our guests are steps away from the historic entertainment district of Overton Square. You will find a variety of dining options and great little spots for a cocktail like Lafayette’s Music Room (a historic Memphis landmark), the Zebra lounge, Babalu, Bari, and Boscos to name only a few. If you are looking for a nice upscale meal we highly recommend Porch and Parlor in Overton Square. You will not be disappointed but be sure to plan ahead and make a reservation. They do a great job of making each guest feel valued and the meal will be excellent. We suggest starting out with the Bacon rack as an appetizer. Whispering Oak is also a few blocks away from the Cooper/Young District where there is another great selection of locally owned restaurants one of a kind cuisine. A couple of our favorites.. The Beauty Shop and Tsunami. The newest addition is Parish Grocery serving breakfast, lunch or dinner with a Cajun flair. There are antique stores and vintage shops and art galleries all within a stones throw away. You will enjoy visiting Buff city soap, Burkes Books, Goner Records, and the House of Mews. Other local midtown dining that we like to recommend, Soul Fish Cafe on Cooper, Casablanca on Madison and Edge Alley on Monroe. There are several breweries nearby, one of the local favorites, Wiseacre on Broad Ave and Memphis Made Brewing on Cooper and the Tap Room. You will not want to miss some good Memphis BBQ at Central BBQ just down the street, an easy walk. They have a great outdoor patio. One of the newest attractions in Midtown Memphis is Crosstown Concourse, the award winning renovation of the Sears Tower which houses retail space, art galleries, and unique dining options. The Zoo is ranked top 8 in the United States. It is located in Overton Park only minutes away along with the Brooks Museum of Art. Just behind the museum is the Levitt shell where Elvis performed his first live concert. Located on Overton Park Avenue is one of best kept secrets in town, Ecco Restaurant and it’s sister Tapas bar Tonica. A great spot for a cocktail or excellent dinner. Near the Park is the beautiful Rhodes College Campus. We love hosting our Rhodes students and families. Right around the corner from Whispering Oak is Fresh Market if you need any groceries or freshly prepared meals or fruits and vegetables. Downtown is full of great things to do. It is a 10 minute Uber away. One of our favorite places to recommend for breakfast is the Arcade, the oldest Diner in the city. It is steps from the National Civil Rights Museum and close to the Big River Crossing. Other attractions downtown include the beautiful Peabody Hotel, The Pyramid with great views of the river and city from the observation decks at the top, Beale Street Home of the Blues with live Jazz and local bands and great southern eating. A couple we like to recommend at Blues City Cafe and Miss Polly’s Soul City cafe. The beautiful Orpheum Theater on Main Street is located at the edge of Beale and there are some great dining options nearby on South Main. One we like to recommend is Cafe Pontotac. Of course the largest attraction to our city is Graceland and Sun Studios which are both very nearby. Even though Whispering Oak is located right in the heart of the city and steps from endless attractions you may enjoy a peaceful respite with a beverage right on the front porch watching a spectacular sunset. Our wish is that we have provided a peaceful escape for our guests to relax and refuel and create a forever memory of their time spent in Midtown Memphis at Whispering Oak.

In 2009 we bought our home in the Evergreen Historic district of Midtown Memphis and took on the challenge of renovating a nearly 100 yr old home that had been much neglected and was in great need of some tender love and care. We were warned by our neighbors before entering the house for the first time to look beyond the water leaks and the debris and see the beauty that was hidden beneath its poor condition. As we stepped inside it was as if we had stepped back in time 100 years. The wonderfully preserved woodwork, beamed ceilings, wood floors, and unique tile patterns on the porches and bathrooms were stunning. During the 7 month renovation process we were very careful to preserve the character and history found there. The highlight of our year is hosting an annual Christmas Open House for our neighbors and friends by adorning our home with 13 Christmas trees and counting.... Traveling is a passion we both share. We take advantage of any opportunity we can to see the world. When we travel we seek out botanical gardens and enjoy sampling local foods and hearing music that is unique to the city we are visiting. We recently returned from Machu Picchu/ Peru. What a beautiful country and beautiful people. There is so much to learn about the cultures that formed our amazing world. We appreciate museums and architecture and the history that is hidden there. We enjoy meeting people and making friends. Airbnb has opened so many doors for us and allowed us to make new friends when traveling and when hosting. We have learned so much from our travels and have been reminded of the blessings and freedoms that we are given in America. We extend an invitation to you if you are near our city to look us up. Our home is steps from beautiful Overton Park, the world class Memphis Zoo, Brooks Museum of Art, the links (golf course), Levitt Shell (amphitheater where Elvis performed his first live concert), Memphis College of Art and Rhodes College. One of the newest attractions to our neighborhood and a must see during your visit is the award winning restoration of the million square foot Sears Tower renamed Crosstown Concourse. We are also a few blocks away from Overton Square and Cooper-Young where you will find a wide selection of restaurants and theaters.
