Forever Portraits with River City Tintype
Witness the magic of historical photography and make heirloom portraits in silver. Invented in 1851, wet-plate collodion tintype photography involves coating a metal plate with light-sensitive chemistry to make an image. Because this process does not involve film negatives, each plate captures a singular image that will last lifetimes, with a metallic surface and high level of detail that could never be duplicated with a digital process or filter. Located near downtown Louisville, my studio occupies the first floor of a house built in 1885, with a darkroom and portrait parlor modeled after those in the 19th century. In a one-hour studio portrait session, we’ll discuss the tintype process, look at historical and contemporary examples, and plan poses for portraits. Together we’ll make three 4x5” hand-poured photographic plates, using a hybrid of antique and contemporary tools. You’ll see the process from start to finish, from coating a plate to developing in the darkroom. After your session, I will varnish your plates and mail them to you. You will also receive high-resolution images via email.

Artist-Guided Public Art Tour
Fort Wayne has an evolving public art culture that is largely powered by grassroots efforts. I will take you to see most of the public art in downtown. I can tell you about the artists and the stories behind the works. I can also answer questions and give insight into the community organizations that power our public art installations! This is a a three mile walking tour (1.5 - 2 hours of walking). The tour will take us to all corners of downtown Fort Wayne. We will start at the Depot, the only surviving example of that style of train depot in the world. Midway through the walk we will stop in a local spot, enjoy a beverage of your choice (on me), and I will teach you one of my favorite drawing games. The entire tour and rest stop should last 2 hours. This is an outdoor tour, so it is best to book in nice weather. The tour is unavailable in ice, snow or heavy rain. Other things to note: We can walk at any pace that the group requires, however, if we are walking slowly we may need to skip some art in order to complete the tour within the 2 hour time limit.
