While we don’t require security deposits for all reservations, there might be cases where we believe doing so is necessary to help protect Hosts, based on things like the timing of a reservation or your listing’s features.

How they’re calculated

We calculate the deposit amount based on 60% of your listing’s nightly rate with a cap of $1,000 USD. This amount is adjusted for longer stays. If you’ve already added a Host-required security deposit to your listing, we’ll use the amount you set (provided it’s over $0).

How they’re applied

Guests are shown the amount of an Airbnb-required security deposit at the time of booking. Two days before a stay begins, an authorization hold for the amount will be placed on their payment method. If we’re unable to place the hold, they’ll be notified via email and given 12 hours to update their payment method.

If they don’t respond, or their new payment method fails, we’ll cancel the reservation and provide a full refund. If a guest cancels for reasons unrelated to the security deposit, you’ll receive payment according to your cancellation policy.

How they’re collected

The process for collecting on a security deposit is the same for both Host- and Airbnb-required security deposits—it’s not automatic. You’ll need to submit a request via the Resolution Center within 14 days of checkout. Learn more about the process.

Security deposits must be handled through Airbnb. Handling them in cash or through a third-party payment method is a direct violation of our terms.

If there’s no security deposit

Even if there’s no security deposit, you’re still protected by AirCover for Hosts, which includes Host damage protection. All AirCover for Hosts requests for damage, missing items, and unexpected cleaning are subject to the Host Damage Protection Terms.
