As a guest, you may encounter 2 different kinds of security deposits: those required by Airbnb and those required by Hosts. Security deposits are typically based on a place’s features or the timing of a reservation. Deposits are never requested based on a guest’s race, nationality, ethnicity, age, sex, or gender identity.
Airbnb-required security deposits
If Airbnb requires a security deposit, 2 days before your stay begins, we'll put an authorization hold on your payment method. You won’t be charged, but the hold means you can’t access these funds until the hold is released (ex: if your credit card has a limit of $5,000, and the security deposit is $500, then your limit would be reduced to $4,500 until the hold is released.)
Check that your payment method has enough funds to cover the security deposit (Airbnb isn’t responsible for overdraft fees). If we can’t authorize the hold, we'll send you an email and you'll have 12 hours to provide another payment method. If that doesn’t work out, your reservation will be cancelled and you’ll be refunded.
As long as there isn’t any property damage during your stay, Airbnb will release the hold 14 days after you check out, or before the next guest checks in. Your bank may take 3–12 business days to process the release of funds.
Host-required security deposits
Some Hosts require a security deposit for their places. The amount can be from $100–$5,000, and is determined by the Host. Don’t worry—you’ll have a chance to review the deposit amount before you finalize the reservation.
When a security deposit is required by a Host, we don’t place an authorization hold on your payment method. You’re only charged if the Host requests reimbursement for damages and you agree to pay, or if Airbnb approves their request.
When a Host wants to collect a security deposit as reimbursement for damages, their request is handled according to our Host Damage Protection Terms. Host damage protection is a part of AirCover for Hosts, top-to-bottom protection for Airbnb Hosts.
How security deposits work if there’s an issue
The claims process is the same for both types of deposits. A Host can report an incident and submit a request for part or all of the security deposit within 14 days of checkout or before the next guest checks in—whichever is sooner.
